Foxes are smart, but neither sly or manipulative. Well, I mean individuals might be, but its a stereotype that all are. The simple rason the fox did that to those kits was not because it had a thirst for blood or just felt like it, it did it because cats are foxes rivals: they hunt the same prey in the same areas and are therefore competition. Wiping out rival young while they still can’t defend themselves is a good way to prevent future competition; it happens a lot in the wild, for example lions do it to cheetah and leopard cubs if they find them alone.
However, I still believe that Brokenstar disguised his scent with that of fox scat and killed the kits to frame Yellowfang.
